በደቡብ አፍሪካዋ ጆሃንስበርግ ከተማ ነዋሪ የሆነው ምሎትሽዋ ፔንሰን ላለፉት ስድስት ዓመታት የትም ቦታ ሲሄድ ሽጉጡ ተለይቶች አያወቅም። ወደ ሱቆች፣ ምግብ ቤቶች እና ጂም ሲሄድ ሁሉ ታጥቆ ነው።

በየዕለቱ ከፍተኛ ወንጀል በሚፈጸምባት ደቡብ አፍሪካ ውስጥ የሚታጠቀው ሽጉጥ የዩቲዩብ ቪዲዮዎችን ለሚያዘጋጀው ለፔንሰን ወሳኝ የሆነ ነገር ነው።

“ጠንቋይ ስላልሆንኩ መቼ ጥቃት እንደሚፈጸምብኝ አላውቅም” በማለት እራሱን ለመከላከል ሽጉጡን ዘወትር ታጥቆ እንደሚንቀሳቀስ ፔንሰን ለቢቢሲ ተናግሯል።

“እራሴን ለመከላከል ሽጉጤን ለመጠቀም የተገደድኩባቸው ጊዜያት በርካታ ናቸው” በማለትም አንድ ምሽት ከእራት ሲመለስ በስለት አስፈራርቶ የኪስ ቦርሳውን ለመውሰድ ስለተደረገበት ሙከራ ያስታውሳል።

በዚህ ጊዜ ሽጉጡን አውጥቶ ቦርሳውን ሊወስድ የነበረው ቀማኛ ያየዘውን ቢላ በማስጣል ቆሻሻ መጣያ ውስጥ ከትቶታል። ነገር ግን አንድም ጥይት አልተኮሰም።

ፔንሰን ቁጥራቸውን ያልገለጻቸው የጦር መሳሪያዎችን ለመታጠቅ የተገደደው የአገሪቱ መንግሥት እና ፖሊስ ሊያስጠብቁለት ያልቻሉትን ደኅንነቱን ለመከላከል ብቻ እንደሆነ ይናገራል።

በፔንሰን ሃሳብ የምትስማማው የጆሃንስበርግ ነዋሪዋ ሊኔት ኦክስሌይ፣ እንዲህ ዓይነቱን አደጋ “ፊት ለፊት መጋፈጥ የግድ ነው” ትላለች።

ለዚህም የጦር መሳሪያ ባለቤት የሆኑ ሴቶች እራሳቸውን ለመከላከል የሚያስችል ሥልጠናን የሚሰጥ ድርጅት አቋቁማለች።

የ12 የጦር መሳሪያዎች ባለቤት የሆነችው የ57 ዓመቷ የጆሃንስበርግ ከተማ ነዋሪ “ቆንጆ ጫማ ከምገዛ ይልቅ አዲስ ሽጉጥ መግዛትን እመርጣለሁ” ስትል ለቢቢሲ ተናግራለች።

‘ገርልስ ኦን ፋየር’ የተባለው ድርጅቷ የተደፈሩ፣ የተዘረፉ ወይም አንዳች ዓይነት ጥቃት የተፈጸመባቸው ሴቶችን የሚያግዝ ነው። በደቡብ አፍሪካ የሚፈጸመው ወሲባዊ ጥቃት መጠን በዓለም ላይ ከፍተኛ ከሚባሉት መካከል ይመደባል።

Mlotshwa Penson, a resident of Johannesburg, South Africa, has never seen a gun anywhere he went for the past six years. He’s armed every time he goes to shops, restaurants, and the gym.

Guns in high-crime South Africa are a daily concern for Penson, who produces YouTube videos.

“I don’t know when I’m going to be attacked because I’m not a witch,” Penson told the BBC, who always carries a gun for self-defense.

“There have been many times when I have had to use my gun to defend myself,” he says, recalling an attempt to take his wallet at knifepoint one night when he returned from dinner.

At this point, the robber, who was about to take the bag, pulled out his gun and dropped the knife he was carrying and stuck it in the trash. But not a single shot was fired.

Penson says that he was forced to carry an undisclosed number of weapons to protect his security, which the government and the police could not provide.

Lynette Oxley, a resident of Johannesburg who agrees with Penson, says such a risk “must be faced”.

To this end, she has established an organization that provides self-defense training for women who own firearms.

“I’d rather buy a new gun than buy a nice pair of shoes,” the 57-year-old Johannesburg resident, who owns 12 firearms, told the BBC.

Her organization ‘Girls on Fire’ helps women who have been raped, robbed or otherwise abused. Rates of sexual violence in South Africa are among the highest in the world.
