ፕሬዝደንቱ በተቃውሞ እየታመሰች ወዳለችው ደሴት አቅንተዋል።

ማክሮን እንዳሉት ቁጥራቸው 3000 ገደማ የሚሆኑ የፈረንሳይ ፖሊስ አባላት አስፈላጊ ከሆነ በፓሪስ ኦሊምፒክ ጊዜም ቢሆን በደሴቷ ይቆያሉ።

ባለፈው ሳምንት የወጣ የምርጫ ሕግን ተከትሎ በተነሳ ተቃውሞ ሁለት የፖሊስ መኮንኖችን ጨምሮ ስድስት ሰዎች ሕይወታቸውን አጥተዋል።

ካናክ የተሰኙት የሀገሪቱ ጥንታዊ ሕዝቦች የፈረንሳይ ዜጋ የሆኑ ነዋሪዎች በምርጫው እንዲሳተፉ መፈቀዱ ትክልል አይደለም ሲሉ ድምፃቸውን በማሰማት ላይ ይገኛሉ።

ኒው ካሌዶኒያ ነፃነቷን ልታውጅ ይገባል በሚሉት ካናክ እና ፓሪስ በተቀመጠው ማዕከላዊው መንግሥት መካከል ለረዥም ጊዜ የቆየ አለመግባባት አለ።

ካናክ ከደሴቷ ጠቅላላ የሕዝብ ቁጥር 40 በመቶው ይሆናሉ።

በአውስትራሊያ እና ፊጂ መካከል የሚገኙት ደሴቶች ከ19ኛው ክፍለ ዘመን ጀምሮ የፈረንሳይ ግዛት ሆነው ቆይተዋል። ዘንድሮ የታየው ተቃውሞ ከ1980ዎቹ በኋላ የከፍ መሆኑ ተዘግቧል።

French President Emmanuel Macron said his country’s police would remain in New Caledonia for “as long as necessary”.

The president heads to the island, which is currently reeling from protests.

Macron said about 3,000 French police officers would remain on the island if needed, even during the Paris Olympics.

Six people, including two police officers, were killed in protests following the election law last week.

The country’s ancient people, the Kanaks, are raising their voices saying that allowing French citizens to take part in the elections is not a ban.

There is a long-standing dispute between the Canucks and the Paris-based central government, who say New Caledonia should declare independence.

Kanak make up 40 percent of the island’s total population.

The islands between Australia and Fiji have been a French territory since the 19th century. This year’s protests are reported to be the highest since the 1980s.

Macron, who flew to New Caledonia’s capital Noumea on Thursday, called for the country to return to peace and stability “as soon as possible”.
