The Tigray Health Research Institute announced that the number of children and mothers affected by severe food shortages has increased in Tigray.

Director of the institute, Dr. Hayalom Kahsai, told the BBC that despite the end of the bloody war, the lack of food for mothers and children in the region has not improved.

It was a long war. Then drought was added to it. It is expected that there will be a food shortage. The most vulnerable are children, nursing mothers and pregnant women. We expected the nutritional status to improve after the war. But data shows that not much has changed,” he said.

According to the World Health Organization, severe and moderate malnutrition in an area should be less than 15%, but in Tigray, it reached more than 37%, the director said.

The director said that in a survey conducted in seven districts, they looked at children between the ages of 6 months to 59 months or 5 years and 8.3 percent of them were vulnerable to malnutrition.

“The average malnutrition rate is around 29.3 percent. The sum of the two global undernutrition rates is worse at 37.6. Studies on mothers show similar results.”

According to the World Health Organization, if the average and mandatory food shortage in an area or community is more than 15 percent, it means ‘blanket ke verage’ or everyone needs food.
